Issue of the Unfunded Liability raised in Alberta Legislature, May 11, 2005 Richard Miller, Liberal MLA for Edmonton-Rutherford raised the question of the unfunded liability of the Teachers' Pension Fund with the Finance Minister, Shirley McClellan. He asked whether the government had plans "to reduce this financial burden [$6 billion] on Alberta's taxpayers." The minister responded that "we pay two-thirds of the cost of that unfunded liability and the teachers pay the remaining one-third." Miller asked that with that debt "why is this government continuing to tell Albertans that they are debt free?" The minister responded that "we do not in any way hide our liability on pensions. It's very clearly laid out in our financial statements . . . we do have a workout plan." ARTA © 2005 |
