Scrap Mandatory Retirement
A report by the Certified General Accountants Association of Canada suggests that "Canada should eliminate mandatory retirement and discourage early retirement incentives 'to ensure a productive society'."

Currently in four provinces and three territories mandatory retirement at any age is viewed as discriminatory. These are Alberta, Manitoba, Prince Edward Island and Quebec, as well as the Northwest Territories, Nunavut and Yukon.

In addition the report, Growing Up: The Social and Economic Implications of an Aging Population, says that Canadians need to understand personal financial planning claiming "Canadians should take more responsibility for their own personal financial planning to complement government programs."

Are you winning?
In the last two years the cost of living in Alberta has risen by 7.0 percent. My pension in that same period has increased by 4.02 percent. You can work out the loss.

A 27 percent increase?
Is it any wonder that in order to keep up with corporate Canada, the Alberta government is being told it should increase its deputy ministers' salaries by 27 percent? The government in its fetish for paying off the debt has deliberately depressed wages, failed to repair schools, cut back on nurses and failed to look after its long term care patients and now such short term thinking is coming back to haunt it.

It's the same the whole world over!
The British Guardian newspaper reports that 1.6 million pensioners in Britain "have returned to work to boost a poor retirement income." Of those almost "14% have rearranged savings and investments to cover income shortfall, 4% have resorted to selling their homes, and 3.2% have sold objects such as furniture and electrical goods" all to make ends meet! Sound familiar?
